PRIORITY INITIATIVES PENDEEN

A need has been identified by the Community for this short-term project which will
help build capacity and improve facilities in Pendeen and the surrounding area.

Priority Initiatives Pendeen has come about to help and guide groups within the community in order for them to progress. There are three main groups who are at varying stages of their own individual projects.

Pendeen Parish Members Institute (PPMI)
They have secured funding for a new building, and will now be given help with the recruitment process for a Project Manager, they will receive informal or formal training as and when required to underpin their knowledge as they become employers for the first time.

Youth Activities Pendeen (YAP)
YAP have a community project which they have decided to achieve in three stages.
  • Stage 1 - Completed May 2003 working with Penwith District Council.
  • Stage 2 - Successful application to Living Spaces received £24,500 which has enabled them to proceed and order the relevant equipment for the "Toddlers Area" which should be completed by the summer of 2004.
  • Stage 3 - Approximately £60,000 still has to be found to fund this final stage of the project which will provide the 6 - 15+ years with exciting, safe and fun equiptment.

This group will be helped with informal training concerning the monitoring and evaluation required by the funding bodies to ensure they follow funders requirements and are never in a postition where they could be asked to return monies provided. Assistance will also be given to find the additional funding required.

Pendeen Pre-School
Due to OFSTED regulations and care standards the existing venue used by the Pre-School is not suitable, it is therefore essential that a purpose-built new facility for the Pre-School is provided within the village. The Pre-School Committee is fairly new and are about to go through a major learning process whilst collecting evidence, information and costs for their new-build project. The previous committee with assistance from the Pre-School staff have acquired the relevant planning permission and have agreed a lease with Cornwall County Council to enable them to build on the site of the Pendeen Primary School.

Regular meetings have taken place with existing community groups who own their own buildings to discuss if there was a way forward with sharing a building, unfortunately this was not possible due to specific needs and OFSTED requirements. The good thing that came out of these meetings was that there will be no duplication in provision by either of the groups or venues.

The committees of these groups are having to take on new responsibilities and undertake work in areas, which they have little or no experience. Priority Initiatives Pendeen will support these groups and provide the resources and expertise to enable them to go through a learning process, at the end of which they will be confident enough to achieve their aims which will ensure that both individuals and groups will work towards long-term sustainability. Through this local capacity will have been strengthened.
