THE HISTORY OF PENDEEN PLAYING FIELD In 1969 Mrs Derrington asked Mr Gilbert about suitable land for a children's playing field, he in turn spoke to Mr Batchelor (who was then the managing director of Geevor Tin Mine). They suggested the field behind Crescent Place. A committee was formed, trustees were chosen and Pendeen Village Children's Playing Field Association was founded. The land was bought for the village for £1 and the residents of Crescent Place were given some land for a garden at the rear of their properties. Money was raised with the help of Geevor and play equipment was bought and erected. An official opening day was held and all the children under the age of 14 were given mugs. Over the years fun days have been held with stalls, BBQ's fancy dress and children's sports. Sadly interest waned over the years and with Health and Safety issues it was very hard to keep things going, luckily Penwith District Council took over maintenance of the playing field. In 1992 Pendeen Band approached the trustees and asked if they could build a practice room in the field. They were allowed to apply for planning permission (which was granted) on condition that no cars would be allowed on the field and the room would only be used for band practice. YAP In July 2001 a couple of parents started asking if equipment could be improved as there was nothing suitable for toddlers. A group of parents along with Helen Rodda from The Pendeen Community Project got together and formed YAP (Youth Activities Pendeen). The aim of YAP is to provide new play equipment to cater for all ages in the Playing Field. Click here for YAP diary dates and to see what YAP have achieved to date |
