SEEK
THE PERFECT WAY
Mayo Shin Do is a modern style of martial art. Although
based on traditional Chinese and Japanese forms, it is more suited to
the modern European body form and dress and the names of the moves are
all in English. It was founded by Grand Master, Mr George Mayo, 10th
Dan Black Belt, when he was training with Master Kenshiro Abbe in the
1950's. Mr Mayo has studied many kinds of martial art including Judo,
Karate, Tai Chi Chaun, Pau Kau and Jujitsu.
STYLE
The style ues safe and efficient movement, speed, accuracy, balance
and focus, rather than just force. Control rather than agression. Breathing
is kept as natural as possible. There is no forced breath or shouting.
There is no special hardening of fists/feet or breaking as this can
lead to troubles such as arthritis in later life.
The idea of the style was tha it would be a language and movement for
people here and now - a safe but effective system.
Our style used to be called Kyushindo which means "Seek the perfect
way". It is now called Mayo Shin Do ("Mr Mayo's perfect way")
TRAINING
A training session starts with excercises to warm, stretch and condition
the body. Many routines were adapted from Yoga. Students (karateka)
also learn relaxation, meditation, anatomy, first aid and diet. A session
is mainly karate techniques, including some judo, self defense, holds
and releases.
Everyone starts as a beginner (white belt). Men, women, old, young,
fit and not so fit are all welcome. Wear a track suit or loose clothing.
Each student is taught to their own need. There is no aggressive sparring.
FINALLY
Just train, rewards slowly come. Strive to improve your skill, fitness,
movement, coordination, control and effectiveness. Gain confidence in
"tricky" situations. Work hard but have fun. Add a new dimension
to your life.
