What is the Handyperson Scheme?
A mobile repairs service making home visits to carry out small repairs or other minor jobs. The service is offered to Penwith and Kerrier residents over the age of 60, or disabled. However, if you are a tenant we will not normally carry out work that is your landlord's responsibility. Referrals may be taken from individuals or via organisations.

Also offered is a free home safety check with the aim of identifying and putting right areas of potential danger in the home.

How is the Handyperson Scheme funded?
Funding has come from Cornwall County Council Social Services and Penwith and Kerrier District Councils.

Is there a charge for the work?
Yes- All those who receive the service will pay for materials at cost price. If in receipt of qualifying benefits, labour is free and there is a travel charge of £5 (£2 if the work is completed within half an hour). For those not in receipt of benefits, labour is £5 per hour with a £5 travel charge.

How do I pay for the work?
When a job is finished you will be asked for your signature to say you are happy with the work. An invoice will then be prepared and posted to you for payment. The Handyperson is not allowed to take the payment from you himself.

What sort of jobs would the Handyperson be able to do?

Replacing light bulbs. Replacing electric fuses and plugs. Fit doorbells. Fit smoke alarms. Fit door chains/spy holes, new or replacement locks. Replace small window panes. Repair rotten window frames. Put up shelves and pictures. Re-hang doors. Repair small areas of fencing and garden gates. Take up/put down floor coverings. Take down/put up curtains and curtain rails. Move small pieces of furniture. Unblock sinks. Change washers. Turn mattress. Replace broken toilet seats. Tile small areas of bathroom/kitchen. Renew bath sealants.

Are there any tasks that the Handyperson cannot undertake?

Yes - the Handyperson can only work to stepladder height and cannot undertake work involving decorating, gardening and mains gas and electricity.

In order to keep appointments the Handyperson can only carry out pre-arranged work within the allotted time.

We do not provide an emergency service.
