Engage, West Cornwall Neighbourhoods

Engage Neighbourhoods has been developed to help, advise and provide funding for community projects in west Cornwall.
The Projects that we are interested in are ones that help improve community facilities, offers the chance for training or increases employment opportunities, it is also hoped that the project will see improved conditions for local people, better facilities, more employment and training opportunities.
Anyone can apply, but the new Engage Neighbourhoods Programme is particularly targeted at individuals, neighbourhoods and groups who have so far had limited chances to be involved with the community and social opportunities.
Initially, 5 million pounds was earmarked for Engage Neighbourhoods over a four-year period. The amount of money that can be obtained differs between projects and match funding can be sought from other sources. The project operates across Penwith and Kerrier and in one part of Carrick. High priority is given to certain areas and a total of 36 areas qualify.
At present the following projects have been approved for SRB6 funding:-
Build and Train Holistic, Penwith Centre phrase II, Pendeen Community Project ll, Early Years Centre, Penwerris Community Regeneration Project, KATCH, Camborne Community Centre, InSTEP Project, Penwith Credit Union, NETWork Training.

Team Event

Last October 2002 the team organised an event/get together at Poldark Mine to thank all those who have worked so hard on community projects for young people over the last few years and to provide information on the ongoing "Small Grants for Young People" scheme and the new "Engage Neighbourhood" Fund.
It was a social gathering with a serious purpose. Most of the Young People projects were represented, including Propel (YMCA), the Pendeen Community Project, the Beacon Regeneration Group, Kerrier Interlink, Kerrier Healthy Living Centre, Cascade Theatre Company, Mullion Village Wardens, Youth Link, Youth Forum and the Young Builders' Trust. All of these have worked tirelessly over the last couple of years to help young people in central and West Cornwall develop skills, find jobs, enjoy previously unattainable leisure activities or simply have a voice in their community.
Other organisations represented included Kerrier District Council, Penwith Housing Association and the first of the new Engage Neighbourhoods Projects, the KATCH project, based in Redruth, which will support community and voluntary organistions across the region.
The Event was a great success - it celebrated the success of the Young People Programme and set the foundations for further worthwhile activities under the new Engage Neighbourhoods initiative.

We intend to branch out and embrace business schemes, promote training and increase job opportunities. The new programme is particularly targeted at individuals, neighbourhoods and groups in the region who, until now, have had little or no chance to be involved in the community and social opportunities.
We will be pleased to receive editorial from existing projects on new developments, achievements and any other happenings within your project that we can share with other projects.
